The Silver Laptop, Part 3

A few months ago, I wrote about an unfortunate incident where my laptop was stolen.  Even though it was a traumatic experience, I remained positive and hopeful that something good would come of it.  Now the story has concluded and I am pleased to share the favourable results.

The first joy came from family members.  A custom-crafted card resembling a slot machine with a little foam arm.  Three pulls of the arm and three tugs of the paper within revealed three MacIntosh apples.  Each had a bite removed, just like the logo for Apple computers which adorned my missing laptop.  I was speechless and overcome with emotions as I opened up three envelopes containing enough money to significantly contribute to the timely replacement of my stolen computer.  As a result, I have been happily enjoying my new laptop for the past few months!

The second joy came from my insurance adjuster.  He sent me an e-mail stating he would expedite my claim due to my efforts in compiling a very organized package for him to process.  He stated that I should expect to receive a cheque in the mail for the full amount soon.  I was so pleased that I responded immediately, thanking him for his decision and helping me to move forward from this incident in a positive manner.  In turn, he expressed appreciation for my appreciation, with open offers for any future assistance.  Our on-line conversations left me feeling satisfied and eager to share the good news with others!

The third joy came from a feeling of deep contentment within, knowing that a wrongful act had been rectified.  Allowing grief to run its course was an important part of my recovery as was the kind actions of others.  My faith that goodness prevails in the world remains.  I still believe that for every difficult situation we encounter in life, goodness awaits.

Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come”.  ~Anne Lamott

Dawn has emerged.

One Big Adventure

Life is one big adventure.  One thing leads to another and before you know it, you are on this wild escapade wondering where and when it will end.  That is exactly what happened when I set out for a drive on a beautiful sunny afternoon.

The temperature was perfect, the skies were blue.  Traffic flowed beautifully as I maneuvered through busy city streets.   All was well, in fact, almost too good to be true.  That was when things began to happen.

There were no signs or audible noises to alert me that anything was about to go wrong.  My car was purring happily  down the road when all of a sudden, the ‘Check Engine’ light came on.  This always causes alarm for me since it means that something is wrong.  I mentally tuned in to my car’s performance and noticed nothing unusual.  There was no smoke coming from under the hood and my car did not sputter or chug along as if it were ill.  Everything seemed fine and then something else happened.  The ‘Brake’ warning light came on, a bright red icon with exclamation mark that demanded my attention.  Shortly after that, the ‘ABS’ warning light came on, signalling there was something wrong with my anti-lock braking system.  Dread loomed over me like a black cloud as I anticipated something very bad about to happen.  I held my breath for what was to come and sure enough, something else did happen.

My speedometer stopped working.  It registered zero kilometres per hour as I kept pace with traffic.  Then my fuel gauge began to fluctuate wildly, jumping up and down by quarter tank increments.  By now, I was totally bewildered and had pulled over to inspect under the hood.  Perhaps some aliens had taken over my vehicle and were testing its suitability for space travel.  I braced myself as I opened the hood.  There were no obvious signs of anything wrong, no little green men scurrying about, no evidence of an alien master plan, or anything else for that matter.

It may have given me some peace of mind to at least have seen an alien or two, but that was not the case.  As I returned to the driver’s seat and started up the engine, the warning lights disappeared.  As I started driving, my speedometer returned to working order as did the fuel gauge.  Even though the earlier chaos brought great concern, the fact remained that my car still purred happily.  As I continued to drive along, I concluded that sometimes, warning signs are just that: warning signs.

We all receive warning signs from time to time in life and they may not come from your vehicle.  They might come from an odd sensation within your body or a gut feeling when something just does not feel right.  We can either ignore warning signs or heed them and respond in a timely manner.  Each of us will respond differently, depending on the situation and our frame of mind.  Follow up is always wise since an ounce of prevention is truly worth a pound of cure.  But, if you choose to ignore a warning sign, beware of the risks and pay attention in the future.  The bottom line is that you want to prevent any large-scale catastrophes from occurring.  Although there will always be adventures in life, we can all do our part to avoid the white-knuckled, hair-raising type of adventure that takes our breath away.

As for my car, I figured that the chances of being overtaken by aliens was relatively low and therefore, continued on with my journey,  keeping one eye on the instrument panel and an ear towards my engine … and the next time I see my mechanic, I will get him to check it out.

Flying Wheel

I love to ride my bike because cycling brings me back to my youth.  I particularly enjoy riding on a variety of terrain, from open paved streets to dense forested trails.  Recently, I went on a very long bike ride through city streets into the woods.  Seeing nature always beckons me forth as it nurtures my inner child and instills great wonder and curiosity.

The trail leading in was soft and muddy having rained heavily the day before.  Small rivers littered the path along with the occasional deep puddle.  None were too deep though for me to pedal through and it was not long before I encountered a fork in the path, pointing to the “Flying Wheel” trail.  The name conjured up visions of myself and my bike flying freely down the hill, with wheels magically taking flight.  It seemed like an adventure too good to pass up on.

I launched into the trail and it was not long before I realized the hazards of my decision.  All wood surfaces were extremely slick, making it difficult to control my bike.  The experience made me realize that life is just like the Flying Wheel trail.  Sometimes you have control and other times you don’t.  Obstacles and barriers arise as twists and turns present themselves, dips and drops appear out of no where, and bridges and boulders abruptly command your attention.  Sometimes I needed to relinquish control and simply steer myself to safety and other times, I needed to use all of my skills and senses to complete the ride intact.

The sight of bear dung did not alarm me, at least not until I saw another 5 or 6 mounds.  To avoid confrontation and growing fear, I made noises and sang a positive mantra out loud:   “The road is approaching soon!  The road is approaching soon!”.  Sure enough, the road appeared within minutes and as I pedaled happily out of the forest, I looked back to see an incredible sight.  A very large and healthy looking black bear lumbered across the road.  I was thrilled to see it from a distance and happy that I was not his next meal!

The moral of the story?  Life is an adventure.  Make it a fun and rewarding journey where you can look back and marvel at the vista behind!

The Silver Laptop, Part 2

One month has passed since my silver laptop was stolen and I still remain hopeful for its return.  I was vacationing in Portland, Oregon, on my first solo journey when vandals broke into my vehicle and took several items including my laptop.  Although the incident was very disheartening, I have come to realize many positives for which I am grateful.

Of these, I am most grateful that I was not harmed.  I am also grateful for the love and support I received from family and friends back home.  They, along with the many kind people who assisted me through the initial hours, helped me to turn a very distressing experience into one that was less overwhelming and more managable. I was very pleased that I was able to continue my vacation despite this setback.

Other positives I am grateful for, include the fact that I still had my vehicle and all the necessary resources to continue on with my vacation plans.  I was determined not to give any power to this unfortunate incident and as a result, the following 4 days were immensely restorative.  Reconnecting with nature in dense rain forests and natural beaches became the greatest highlights of my vacation.

Looking back, I am reminded of the importance of being prepared and having back-up plans, especially when travelling alone.  This includes having back-up people as well as knowing emergency routines.  Familiarize yourself with all the essentials in case of emergency so that you are prepared should misfortune cross your path.

One final lesson is derived from creative problem solving.  Since I lost most of my clothes and backpack that held them, I improvised using a simple container for carrying the remainder of my belongings.  I discovered that Rubbermaid and Samsonite are virtually interchangable for road trips.  They are equally durable and convenient, with Rubbermaid being much more cost effective and waterproof to boot!

The Silver Laptop

Laptop computers come in all colors.  Mine was silver, with a little partially eaten apple decorating its lid.  It was a sleek little computer that performed beautifully and dazzled all of its onlookers, including I.

Last week, my little computer was stolen from my vehicle while I was visiting the Japanese Gardens in Portland, Oregon.  Nothing could have prepared me for the shock I felt when I discovered shattered glass all over the passenger side of my vehicle.  Nothing could have prepared me for the great dismay I felt when I realized that both of my backpacks were missing.  It was like I was thrown into a downward spiral of emotions, sinking deeper by the second.  The irony of the story is that this unfortunate event capped off a magical morning in a place of serenity and exquisite beauty.

Misfortune happens when we least expect it.  It can take our breath away and leave us dazed and confused.  Sometimes, we cannot make sense of what happens in life or control outcomes but we can always control our responses.  Once I overcame the initial upset, I chose peace over anger.  I chose to carry on with my holiday as planned and not end it early.  I mindfully chose to give no power to this unfortunate event or the perpetrators.

Ten days have now passed and I remain hopeful that my computer will be returned to me.  I hope that a good samaritan will turn in my belongings and that Portland’s police system will come through for me.  I hope for a joyful and positive end to this story.

This experience reminds me of how unpredictable life can be.  Sometimes, life presents you with a glorious golden cow and other times, it takes your silver laptop.  Sometimes life is wonderful and other times, it is quite unbearable.  Through challenging times, faith is needed to help carry us through.  Having faith allows us to relax and believe that better days are ahead.  I believe in the power of positive karma and that some good will come of this.  I wait with both eyes wide open.
